How have you been affected by drunk drivers?

Drunk Driving Facts

"The speed of alcohol absorption affects the rate at which one becomes drunk. Unlike foods, alcohol does not have to be slowly digested. As a person drinks faster than the alcohol can be eliminated, the drug accumulates in the body, resulting in higher and higher levels of alcohol in the blood. (Narcotic Education Foundation of America, 2002)"

"Among drivers involved in fatal crashes, those with BAC levels of 0.08% or higher were nine times more likely to have a prior conviction for driving while impaired (DWI) than were drivers who had not consumed alcohol (NHTSA 2006)."

A new non-profit foundation, Artists Against Drunk Driving, is being formed. It is the dream child of local Aztec artist, Nikki Smith, who will insure a portrait is painted of each victim killed by a drunk driver in New Mexico from 2006 forward. Other artists who wish to participate will help her fulfill her dream. Mothers Against Drunk Driving, MADD, is helping coordinate this effort which will become a national organization with a chapter in each state. The portraits will be hung in the Aztec Chamber of Commerce until the collection outgrows the wall space at which time a gallery in Aztec will be procured. The plans for the portraits include touring the state and hanging in the Round House during the Legislative Session each year. At the end of the year portraits will be presented to the surviving family members free of charge.Founder and President, Nikki Smith, has been invited to Santa Fe on January 18 where a press release at the Round House will unveil the program and the first portrait, Ty Waybourn, an Aztec youth killed by a drunk driver in November 2003.

The web site is on line www.artistsagainstdrunkdriving.com if you should wish to preview the purpose or download information on how to contact Ms. Smith regarding this program.

We are soliciting donations to help offset initial costs. Artists Against Drunk Driving is filing for 501C3 status; however, until the paper work is complete donations will be accepted by the Aztec Chamber of Commerce. Monies collected will be used for promotion of this project as well as sitting in place the necessary logistics.

Any support you can offer would be appreciated. We will gladly add you to the sponsor page of our web site. Please provide information to be included on the web should you decide to help out.

Sincerely,

Becki Christensen, Executive Director
