How have you been affected by drunk drivers?

Drunk Driving Facts

"At all levels of blood alcohol concentration, the risk of being involved in a crash is greater for young people than for older people (Zador et al. 2000). In 2005, 16% of drivers ages 16 to 20 who died in motor vehicle crashes had been drinking alcohol (NHTSA 2006)."

"A standard drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1.5 ounces of 72-proof distilled spirits, all of which contain the same amount of alcohol -- about .54 ounces. (NHTSA, 2002)"

A new non-profit foundation, Artists Against Drunk Driving, is being formed. It is the dream child of local Aztec artist, Nikki Smith, who will insure a portrait is painted of each victim killed by a drunk driver in New Mexico from 2006 forward. Other artists who wish to participate will help her fulfill her dream. Mothers Against Drunk Driving, MADD, is helping coordinate this effort which will become a national organization with a chapter in each state. The portraits will be hung in the Aztec Chamber of Commerce until the collection outgrows the wall space at which time a gallery in Aztec will be procured. The plans for the portraits include touring the state and hanging in the Round House during the Legislative Session each year. At the end of the year portraits will be presented to the surviving family members free of charge.Founder and President, Nikki Smith, has been invited to Santa Fe on January 18 where a press release at the Round House will unveil the program and the first portrait, Ty Waybourn, an Aztec youth killed by a drunk driver in November 2003.
